Plant functional traits reflect different dimensions of species invasiveness

چکیده

Trait-based invasiveness studies typically categorize exotic species as invasive or noninvasive, implicitly assuming form two homogenous groups. However, can become in different ways (e.g., high abundance, fast spread), likely relying on functional traits to do so. As such, binary classification may obscure associated with invasiveness. We tested whether (1) the way which is quantified influences its correlation and (2) demography-based metrics are related sets of traits. Using a case study 251 herbs Victoria, Australia, we species’ using 10 metrics: four continuous, dimensions (spread rate, local geographic environmental range sizes) six classifications (based alternative sources invasion criteria). examined between set known relate plant demography invasion. Then, demographic were better explained by found that was important: linked metrics, some showed opposite effects across metrics. Species spread either tall small seeds (i.e., good colonizers), had heavy, animal-dispersed seeds. Plants large greater plasticity for Locally abundant plants low SLA heavy strong competitors). Animal dispersal also key reach range. No consistently classifications. Our results indicate rely combinations be Some seed mass) complex relationships invasion: they apparently promote, hampered, no influence findings consistent notion use strategies near optimal under some, but not all, ecological conditions. Compared invasiveness, advances clearer hypothesis testing science.

Plant functional traits and the multidimensional nature of species coexistence.

Understanding the processes maintaining species diversity is a central problem in ecology, with implications for the conservation and management of ecosystems. Although biologists often assume that trait differences between competitors promote diversity, empirical evidence connecting functional traits to the niche differences that stabilize species coexistence is rare. Obtaining such evidence i...

Plant traits with different dimensions of shrubs represent different spatial patterns and plant-to-plant interactions in a temperate desert.

Projective cover (PC) and aboveground biomass (AGB) are the key traits with space attributes of individual plants. They are crucial to the understanding of the plant dynamics and plant patterns at population level. Spatial patterns based on individual plant positions (IND) have been extensively investigated in previous studies. However, very few have focused on PC and AGB. We tested the hypothe...

Getting the Right Traits: Reproductive and Dispersal Characteristics Predict the Invasiveness of Herbaceous Plant Species

To better understand the effect of species traits on plant invasion, we collected comparative data on 20 reproductive and dispersal traits of 93 herbaceous alien species in the Czech Republic, central Europe, introduced after 1500 A. D. We explain plant invasion success, expressed by two measures: invasiveness, i.e. whether the species is naturalized but non-invasive, or invasive; and dominance...

Microbially Mediated Plant Functional Traits

Plants are rife with bacteria and fungi that colonize roots and shoots both externally and internally. By providing novel nutritional and defense pathways and influencing plant biochemical pathways, microbes can fundamentally alter plant phenotypes. Here we review the widespread nature of microbially mediated plant functional traits. We highlight that there is likely fitness conflict between ho...
